The French authorities have announced that nearly 4 million vaccination certificates were disabled on Wednesday as the holders have failed to meet the new rules that started applying on February 15.

The latest update made by France requires all persons who have completed their primary vaccination more than four months ago, except for those who have been infected with the disease since, to receive a booster shot in order for their pass to remain valid, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Even though the new rules on the validity of vaccination pass entered into force last week, the government decided to give a one-week grace period so everyone could be able to meet this requirement.

As soon as the grace period ended, all those who completed their two-dose vaccination more than four months ago but did not receive a booster shot woke up to a deactivated pass.

A deactivated vaccination pass does not grant entry to most public places and events. Thus, all those whose vaccination pass has been deactivated are no longer permitted access to restaurants, bars, cafes, cinemas, theatres, tourist sites, sports and large events, long-haul trains, as well as nightclubs.

The new rules on the vaccination pass affect travellers too, meaning that they will be denied access to all the above-mentioned places and events if they do not hold a vaccination pass indicating that they have received an additional dose.

Nonetheless, the authorities have explained that booster shots are not required when entering the country as long as the primary course has been completed within the last 270 days (nine months). The four-month validity period applies only while in the country.

The new rules on the vaccination pass affect only persons over the age of 18. Those under 18 currently are not required to receive a booster shot.

The data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) show that a total of 94.2 per cent of the entire adult population in France has completed their primary vaccination. In addition, the same reveals that 86.6 per cent have received an additional vaccine dose.

While the rules on the vaccine pass have been tightened, the ones for attending different public places have been relaxed. Since February 16, eating and drinking have been allowed in stadiums, cinemas, bars, and trains. In addition, nightclubs have also reopened.

It has been further revealed that as of February 28, masks will no longer be necessary indoor venues that require the presentation of the vaccine pass.
